COMBAT IN SRI LANKA
The UN evacuated 300 civilians from an active combat zone in Sri Lanka after authorities denied requests for three days from the International Committee of the Red Cross and the UN to access trapped and injured individuals. An estimated 250,000 are stuck inside the dense jungle territory held by the Tamil Tigers, which the Sri Lankan military is attacking in an effort to wipe out the rebels. The Washington Post (1/29)
